From Ponytail to Purpose: Your Hair Donation's Remarkable Journey

Read about your ponytail's journey!
Here at LPT, we provide real hair wigs to children and young people experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment and other conditions - so every time one of our supporters decides to donate their hair and fundraise for our mission, their ponytail can go on to have a life-changing impact on a child or young person.
Each and every hair donation we receive here at LPT goes on its very own journey to becoming one of our real hair wigs.
The Journey of a Ponytail:
The moment you decide to donate your hair to us here at LPT, you are becoming a part of something amazing and joining our community of SuperHairoes!
Whether you have been patiently growing out your hair to 12 inches or longer, or feel ready to embrace a big change and spontaneously donate your hair, from the moment you cut off your ponytail and pop it in the post to our HQ, it begins a remarkable journey.
When we receive hair donations here at LPT, they are quickly sorted based on their length and colour and matched with other, similar hair donations. Because it takes between 14-16 different hair donations to make just one of our real hair wigs, it’s important that our donations are matched up correctly.
They then get sent off to be processed so they’re ready for our wig knotters to create our wonderful wigs!
Each wig is knotted by hand with love and care by our wig knotters up and down the country. Holly, one of our Herefordshire-based wig-knotters told us: “Knotting a wig is long but incredibly rewarding process. Each hair is individually knotted into the lace wig cap and takes a lot of attention to detail, but there is no better feeling than seeing a wig completed for the first time.”
Just one of our wigs can take between 40-60 hours to create, as each hair is carefully and individually knotted into the lace cap!

All together, turning hair donations into one of our unstyled, unfitted wigs costs roughly £550. Any fundraising we receive from our generous supporters makes a huge difference. Whether that’s by fundraising alongside your hair donation, taking part in an event, or organising a Funky Hair Funday, every penny our supporters raise brings us closer to providing Hair and Hope!
Making it theirs:
When a wig is requested by one our wig recipients, it gets fitted, cut, and styled to fit their individual look. Many of our recipients want their wigs to be the closest possible match for their natural hair, and we have a team of amazing, LPT accredited wig fitters up and down the country to help with this. This part of the process costs approximately £150, bringing the total cost of providing a wig, from hair donation to the recipient, up to £700.
Thanks to the variety of amazing hair donations we receive, our wigs come in range of cap sizes, textures, colours, and lengths to provide the perfect selection for each of our recipients. And, because our wigs are made from generously donated real hair, this means they can be cut, coloured, and styled just like your natural hair - a key part to ensuring they fit each recipient’s individual look.
Purpose:
Kiya, one of our wig recipients and an ambassador for LPT, told us that the service we provide here at LPT made a huge difference to her everyday life when experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment.
Kiya said: “To a teenager, losing physical attributes when you’re still trying to figure yourself out as a person makes life so much harder. LPT helped me make sure that I had a temporary fix to, what felt like at the time, an end-of-the-world situation.”
Another of our wig recipients' mums told us all about the difference her daughter’s wig made to her confidence.
She told us: “You see so many amazing people donating hair, so it’s nice to see where it goes and the joy it can bring. I can’t thank everyone enough for donating their hair and putting a smile back on my daughter’s face.”
Another of our wig recipients told us that receiving their wig was “the best thing at that moment”, bringing them “so much confidence”.

These are quotes from just three of our children and young people that we have been able to help, and clearly show how one act of kindness from a hair donor can transform into something amazing for one of our wig recipients.
Every ponytail we receive here at LPT goes on its very own journey to restore a unique part of a wig recipient’s identity. So, wherever you are on your SuperHairo journey, we are so grateful for everyone who has donated their hair in the past, or plans to in the future. It is only with your kindness and generosity that we are able to provide a sense of comfort and care to children and young people.
